A massive fire broke out early Tuesday morning in a garment factory located in Karachi’s New Karachi Industrial Area. The blaze started around 6:30 a.m. and quickly spread, fueled by nearby diesel drums. The fire caused the factory building to collapse by noon, complicating rescue efforts. Firefighters worked tirelessly to control the flames, and the fire was mostly contained by mid-afternoon.
At least five people were injured during the incident, including four firefighters and a TV cameraman. The injured were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and other local medical centers. Police identified the firefighters as Ismail, Owais, Buland, and Aslam, all currently in stable condition. Rescue teams acted swiftly, using ambulances and fire tenders to contain the fire and evacuate the area safely.
The blaze also damaged two nearby industrial units as flames spread rapidly. Authorities, including the Senior Superintendent of Police Zeeshan Siddiqi and district commissioner, oversaw the firefighting operation. Cooling efforts continued throughout the day to prevent any flare-ups. Officials praised the prompt response of Rescue 1122, which helped minimize the damage despite the building collapse.
Fires are common in Karachi due to poor infrastructure and lax safety measures. Many buildings lack fire exits, alarms, and emergency protocols, increasing risks. Experts warn that around 70% of Karachi’s buildings do not meet fire safety standards. Recent months have seen several deadly factory and warehouse fires across the city, highlighting urgent safety concerns.
